There are always new trends coming out in baby carriers, but the latest thing to keep you hip is a baby carrier – for your hips! Gone are the days of lugging that preschooler around your back, and walking around all hunched over. And forget about holding your toddler on your hip using only your arm and hand; all that will do is give you a leaning look that is neither aesthetically pleasing, or comfortable. But now, with the hip baby carriers such as the Ellaroo Mei Hip Carrier or the Playtex Hip Hammock, you don’t have to lean or hunch. Just snap on your carrier, perch your baby up there, and go about your way.

Hip baby carriers really are going to revolutionize the way that parents carry their children around. But before you rush out to buy one, there are some things to remember. The first is that hip carriers are not meant for children that are under four months old, or before they can sit up on their own. Very young infants simply are not able to hold themselves up on a hip carrier, and the lack of back support could actually make it potentially very dangerous for baby. The other important thing to remember is that hip carriers aren’t meant for long walks. While this is not dangerous to the child, hip carriers do still tend to cause your body and spine to shift to one side. So if you strap one on for a long hike, you’re definitely going to feel it the next day!

But for when you’re just heading out to the mall, the grocery store, or just have a cranky baby that wants to be held while you do some thing around the house, there are definitely lots of good choices in hip baby carriers out there!

From: Kiddies Kingdom

Hip carriers are becoming more and more popular, as parents continue to realize the benefits of carriers that allow you to hold your child as you would naturally – on your hip! Of course with these types of carriers there’s also the added support of cushioning and fabric. The Infantino Side Rider is just such a baby carrier and is made from soft fabric that will conform to the child’s shape and provide extra comfort and protection for mum or dad!

The Infantino Side Rider works by positioning a seat, made of soft fabric, around the parent’s hip and uses straps around the parent’s opposite shoulder as well as around the waist to evenly distribute the weight. Inside the carrier there’s a safety harness system so the child is always kept extra-safe and while the fabric is contoured to a child’s shape, there’s also lumbar support for the child to help reduce strain on the back. The parent’s hip support is also padded for additional comfort and there’s a side pocket for stowing your keys or extra change.

But that’s really where the features on this baby carrier just begin. The straps feature a tidy wrap system that helps keep excess straps out of your way and the Set & Forget System also allows you to only have to make the initial adjustment once and then save it for future use. There’s a release buckle that will make the carrier as wide as you need it when taking your baby in and out and the same buckle is also used to easily refasten. The buckling system is also specially designed so that the carrier is easy to get on and off. The Infantino Side Rider baby carrier is suitable for babies from 14 – 36 pounds, or approximately 4 months to well into the toddler years! A great investment in a great carrier!

This baby carrier from Quinny Curb lets you carry your child just as naturally as you would without any additional support – on your hip! The carrier straps snugly around your waist via a wide belt that will help support the back and is particularly helpful with the lumbar area and the shoulder strap is not only padded but fully adjustable so that it’ll fit just about anyone. Baby will also have lots of support with backing that comes up slightly to make baby feel even more secure. Also to add to your child’s support, this Quinny Curbb also comes with an insert that can be tucked inside when being used by smaller children.

The Yamo Carrier comes in red or blue but either choice is sure to make just the fashion statement you’re looking for when toting your little one around town. The Yamo is a pouch-style carrier that can be worn on the front, back, or hip, as child gets older. The carrier has a sleeping hood to help support the child’s head and allow them to rest comfortably and the shoulder straps and waist belt for the parent are both padded to ensure comfort. The Yamo is also made from super-soft cotton, which looks and feels fabulous and the manufacturers have made sure that anyone will be able to enjoy wearing this carrier – including dads, who sometimes feel awkward wearing a carrier. But the look and the feel looks great on anyone!

When considering the Yamo, you may want to keep in mind that although the shoulder straps are padded, they are quite thinner than other models so on long treks, they may be prone to digging in to one’s shoulders. The Yamo also doesn’t have any compartments or pockets for stashing extra nappies, wipes, snacks, or anything else you and your child may need along the way so in addition to the carrier, you may have to bring along another bag anyway to hold all of your things. That being said, the Yamo is one of the best-looking designs on the market today and for £65.00, you may find that it’s perfect for those short strolls to the market.

The Scootababy baby carrier is truly as good as a mother’s hold. Well, almost anyway. This unique style of hip baby carrier is super padded, making it more comfy for both parent and child and allows the parent to carry baby just as they would if they carried them without a carrier. The added bonus of course, is that mum or dad are left hands-free and the position of the baby even feels so much better due to all of the additional support! Not only is the weight distributed through a waist belt, a shoulder strap but the shoulder conforms to the body of the parent so that movement is not hindered. As well, baby’s seat is molded, so that he stays in place more easily and also eliminates the pressure of baby leaning against the parent, as other baby carriers sometimes do. But perhaps the two greatest things about this carrier are the adjustable strap that can be maneuvered with one hand and the extra cusion of padding that will move to wherever the parent wants it!

The carrier is best suited to babies up to 40 kg, which is generally before they hit the age of 3 so if you’re looking for a carrier that you can get a bit more life out of, there are certainly others on the market that will hold 4 and 5 year olds. And the single color of “Classic” black that is offered may appear to be more simple than elegant. The Scootababy baby carrier is available for £68.00.

This carrier can be worn with baby in the front facing in or out, and once they have good head control, the carrier can then be worn with baby on back or on the hip. There are so many features that make this baby carrier unique in a market overflooded with carriers. It has a detachable sleep hood, giving the little one some privacy and is ideal for larger babies who often sleep while being carried around. It also has memory foam in the shoulder straps so that every time the parent slips it on, it feels as though it was custom-made just for them! This baby carrier that is manufactured by CatBird Baby, comes in Flame, which is a deep red; or spa, which is a beautiful polka dot pattern set on a beautiful background of light green. Use this carrier for newborns and then throughout the toddler years and continue to wash it easily in the machine and then hang it out on the line to dry! So much convenience for only £65.00!!

Slings have been around for decades as parents begin to realize the comfort of wearing them while keeping baby close and snug. The Kari-Me Stretchy Wrap takes this concept to a whole new level as it provides the classic swing that is safe, secure and made of the finest cotton and adds a dash of Lycra, making it hug baby in all the right places to keep her comfy. This is one of the only slings that actually allows the parent to feel how comfortable it is for baby with the innovative method of tying it on. Parents first fit the sling onto themselves and tie it very tightly, allowing them to safely place baby inside while maintaining comfort for both. The fabric is also very wide in the middle and narrows at the ends to make tying the sling on even easier!

And the tying method remains the same for any of the five positions in which the sling can be used which are: cradle hold for newborns, upright facing in for young babies, upright facing out, on the hip, and on the back; all three of the latter are for older babies and toddlers. Not only is this sling one that is extremely practical and easy to use but it is also very stylish, with a wrap that hugs the parent while the warm colors help calm baby. The sling is available in seven colors and is only 41 pounds!

Not only is this baby carrier perhaps the easiest to use on the market today but it also uses parent’s natural actions of carrying a child on their hip to create a wonderful seat that a baby or toddler can use while being carted around. This hipseat literally just adds a padded seat around the parent’s hip so that child can stay close and snug while the parent can still run around and do their errands while interacting with baby. Not only is it one of the most natural-feeling baby carriers but it’s also healthier for the parent to use as there is absolutely no weight placed on the back or shoulders, unlike other models which simply minimize it. The seat quickly and easily velcroes around the parent’s waist and can be taken on or off in seconds. This seat which only costs £35, is perfect for the parent that is always scooping their child up while on the go!
